I need to find a bartending job in NYC. Any ideas on where to begin?

I am currently looking for some bartending work in NYC. I got my certificate a year ago and I’ve done a few parties here and there. I have yet to get an actual job as a bartender though. Some of my friends say I should lie on my resume, some say not to, and others say to skip the whole resume thing all together because it is not needed for bartending work. What should I do?

No matter what job you are doing you need a resume unless it is stated otherwise by the hiring manager of the place. Bartending is a business so I have no idea what made your friends think you don’t need a resume at all. Respectable bars/clubs are going to want respectable bartenders. That means a resume.
And again it’s a business you NEVER lie on your resume, that really will come back to bite you in the a*s. In the age of the internet it is easier than ever to check up on these types of things and people do check up on these things. Take a look at how you present yourself, bartending is very much a people person type of job. Are you sending your resume by fax or over the internet? Try delivering it in person instead. Are you dressed nicely when you inquire about a job opening? or do you look like you just walked off the street?
