Flair Bartending
Question about Flair Bartending?

I’m learning flair bartending and when I throw the bottle and it flips, liquid streams out while it is in the air. It doesn’t do it so bad when there is only a little bit of liquid in the bottle, but the more liquid there is, the more it comes out. How can I stop it from doing this?

you don’t fill it so full

if you watch flair bartenders, the bottles are ALWAYS at least half empty, which keeps the liquid in the bottle when flipped.

there are also little ez-pour tips you can buy, but thats cheating.

Historically, bar tenders have been reputable characters of charm and wit that served their customers by way of a stout beer and a friendly listening ear, epitomising the essence of community spirit. Whilst hospitality is of course still paramount in today’s bartending world, entertainment is the key to managing or working in a successful bar or restaurant. Bartending is a major contemporary art form that definitely deserves to be mastered.

Creativity need no longer be attributed to being a prolific painter or an expert reviewer of Puccini’s operas! If you have ever heard of ‘flair bartending’, or ‘extreme bartending’ then you know what I’m talking about. It takes immense skill, ‘flair’ and precision to be at the top of the game when it comes to the world of flair bartending. When performed well by the ‘artisan’, flair can be truly magical to watch, deserving a big cheer and, I think, a gratuity tip!

For those of you that don’t know what I’m talking about, the phrase ‘flair bartending’, adopted in the 1990’s, is the practice of entertaining guests, clientele or audiences with the manipulation of bar tools (e.g. cocktail shakers) and liquor bottles in tricky, dazzling ways. How could we forget the famous performance by Tom Cruise in the hit 1988 movie “Cocktail”. In this blockbuster a young Tom Cruise is the hot shot young bartender who is shown the ropes by the older wiser Brian Brown. Many of us daydream of being able to pull the moves like Cruise did… Well if you can already juggle, then you will most likely be a dab hand at it!

If you like to be the centre of attention, the life and soul of the party, then a career or a hobby in bartending is definitely for you!

I have been into plenty of bars and pubs in my time (huh-hmm… for research purposes) that have been a real let down when it comes to customer service. Here’s the scenario. You walk in to an unfamiliar pub, (or bar, or restaurant,) and you see a few locals at the bar. It seems nice enough, clean and fresh rather than the proverbial smoke stained walls and sticky patterned carpet! You walk up to the bar, unsure of what drinks are available, and to your dismay you either get ignored for more than 30 seconds (which in my opinion is far too long if the bar is not busy) as the bartender serves the ‘regular’ that arrived after you, or you are greeted with a young host whose monosyllabic replies and slightly sour face leave you with a bitter taste in your mouth, and you know that you wont be returning there again.

If you are with me, then you will agree that a happy and welcoming host that makes the effort to smile and remembers your face (or if your lucky, your name) when you visit their bar again are well worth their weight in gold.

If you love to host friends and family in your home for dinner parties or a gathering, then you may be surprised to know that you probably have the specific personality type that would excel at working in, managing or even owning your own restaurant/bar establishment. As well as making copious amounts of friends (and copious amounts of money I hope), you can truly be creative in the way that you deliver services. Imagine knowing how to create hundreds of delicious cocktails, martinis and shots to tantalise your friend’s taste buds, guaranteeing that they will come back for more! Picture being able to juggle liquor bottles or balancing drinks and shakers on various limbs and extremities whilst nonchalantly pouring your customers favourite drink! Or for those of us that think that they might fall over or set light to their hair if they tried these crazy tricks, you could instead entertain using your wit and intellect as you tell the latest jokes and riddles. You could definitely leave the crowds tongue-tied and roaring with laughter.

Whether you are already a keen drink-mixer at home or at work, or you are just getting started, there is so much to learn, discover and master in the world of Bartending.

No longer is Bartending a ‘mugs game’ on the way to enjoying minimum wage. It is now a sought after career if you can get a foot in the door of the more ‘high brow’ clubs, bars and restaurants that pepper our high streets and shopping malls. I have heard of and read many stories of employees making 10 times more that their earnings in tips in one night alone!

It sounds to me that this has to be the best thing since sliced bread, turning your hobby into cash in a flash!
