Bartender Equipment

So you want to make some killer homemade wine? Well you are in the right place because I am going to tell you exactly what you need to do. First and foremost you have a little decision to make. Do you want to go it alone and try to create a home wine making kit yourself or will you let the pros do it for you and purchase a pre-made kit?

This is a big decision because your wine will only be as good as the equipment that you use. Now, I am by no means saying that you cannot make a kit yourself. You certainly can, but you have to be very careful with how you choose your wine making supplies.

If you decide to go it alone the most important piece of equipment that you have to select with great care is your fermentation vessel. If you do not know what that is, or think it sounds like some big, scary and expensive piece of equipment that I have one thing to say.

Relax. The fermentation vessel (also called a fermentation device) is nothing more than an oversized jug that you are going to let your home made wine concoction ferment in for a couple of weeks. It does not have to be anything fancy or expensive. In fact a big 5 gallon plastic jug will work just fine. Now as you get more serious about your wine making you will probably want to upgrade to a more sophisticated device, but for beginners a big plastic jug will do just fine.

Now if you go with the premade wine kit then you have nothing to worry about because everything has already been put together for you, but if you want to save yourself $100 – $125 then you can put together your own kit by heading to your local brew store (if you have a local brew store that is). You can also find home wine making kits online pretty easily.

Now for you do it yourselfers there are a couple things you need to be careful of when picking your fermentation device, or as I like to call it, your big plastic jug. First and foremost make sure the jug is very clean because whatever is inside of it is what your wine will taste like. Secondly, make sure the jug is not scratched up or pitted on the inside. Scratches and pits make really good hiding places for bacteria, milder, mold and other nasties that you do not want in your homemade wine. Finally make sure there are not cracks in the jug and that you will be able to fit a lid on the top of it in order to give it an airtight seal.

1 part fruit, 1 part sugar, 2 parts water, how much yeast? (Home made wine)?

All recipes I have found call for gallons of fruit. Mega crop of blackberries in the acres. I get a gallon in two days if persistent about picking, but don’t want to deprive the birds, turtles, bugs, etc. of their bounty. Pulled a bunch of recipes off the internet. Some say use yeast, some don’t. In measuring things out noticed the above mentioned ratio. So I decided to put up a couple of bottles of strawberry up and would like to try blueberry. But how to cut the yeast amount, and is it necessary at all? Thanks to all for simple info, not buying a lot of equipment for this, just fruit, sugar, water, yeast (if nec.), and really pretty bottles my bartender friends save for me (Yes, I sterilize them). And balloons to keep the bugs and dirt out but allowing for the gas processing involved with the yeast. Hey, the fruit is free, will mix with grape juice if needed at the end.

Some do and don’t your right, fruit produces its own sugar, but to ferment faster you have to use brewers yeast. Same as beer and right into the distilling, sugar, water, yeast, let set set for one month, and you can add flavouring to you own choice, try calling you local distributor, special nozzle is available to let air out and nothing in. Just a word of advise, use glass for wine. Remember your temp has to be in range.
