There’s a new hand craft that is growing in popularity – the art of retouching and remaking a baby doll so that it looks and feels as life-like as possible. This new budding art form is called “reborning”, and can be a fun and rewarding craft for the beginner and expert handcrafter alike.
To “reborn” a baby doll is simple in concept, but painstaking in practice. You start with a soft vinyl baby doll that can come apart and can be stuffed for realistic weight and painted on the inside and outside for lifelike tinting. Re-rooting hair is also important for a more natural appearance. Having a flair for artistic painting isn’t a must, and if you know what a live baby should look like, chances are you will be able to produce a unique individual using whatever talents you have. Creativity and desire are the only talents needed for this new and rewarding craft.
To get started, purchase a soft vinyl baby doll with the features you want. You can buy these blank dolls at many online stores, and they aren’t very expensive. The average price you’d expect to pay for a Berenguer doll, which is the most popular, without the kit to finish it, would be in the $10 – $40 range, depending on where you look. The Berenguer doll is the most lifelike and the easiest to customize. For kits, you can expect to pay much more due to the needed supplies, such as heat-set paints, eyes, hair, tools, etc.
Berenguer kits are the most basic. They come unassembled and simple, so you will actually start from scratch. You can sculpt your baby’s face yourself and give it it’s own skin tone, eye color, hair color and texture…there is no limit to your creativity. There are separate paint kits, as well as tools and accessories to bring your baby to “life”.
There are many choices available, and using the Internet to find deals is probably the best way to shop for your new reborn doll kit. A good starter kit can be purchased for around $30, and an advanced kit upwards of $150. There are kits where the baby’s face is already sculpted for painting, and limbs already weighted and ready for your finishing touch.
You may also want to experiment. Purchase a cheap vinyl doll that is already painted and dressed and take it down to the rubber and start over, making it unique and your own. This method is for the serious creative crafter, since you are truly “reborning” a baby doll into the world!
Also involved in the creative and “reborning” process is purchasing clothes for the baby, or better yet, making them yourself. A completely unique and exclusive doll can get collectors’ attention, as well as getting admirers of your work.
To create a lifelike baby is the whole idea behind these kits, and the craft itself. There are collectors who will pay hundreds of dollars for well-made reborn baby. It has even been found to be highly therapeutic to women to create or to own one of these precious dolls. The craft of reborning can be a gratifying experience for the novice and expert handcrafter.

I Have Guppies, they Seem to fight, is this bad?
Right now we have 4 guppies (2 mail and 2 Female, we think) and A female beta living happily in a 20 Gallon tank, there are plenty of plants and fun things for them but still 2 of them swim quite vigorously with each other. We believe that these are the 2 males, the slightly larger of the two has a very spotted tail and flairs it when they are together almost like he is showing off, saying “Ha! Look at my fin, its spottier than yours ‘flitter flitter flitter’”. The slightly smaller Male is redder and its spots darkening. They do seem to ‘fight,’ like trying to nip at each other. Why is this? Am I doing something wrong? Is there anything we can do to help them? These fish are only a couple of months old, and as far as we know they have not birthed anything, they were given to us from a neighbor who got them from working at the humane society. If you need any more information I am happy to supply it!

Ideally, you should have your guppies in a 2:1 female to male ratio. This will prevent dominance in the males (you know, the whole “there are enough chicks for the two of us” kinda male mentality). Look into getting a couple more females.
It may not be that they’re being aggressive either. Males are known to get frisky with one another from time to time (I should know – the three males I have in my 55-gallon are, uh, interesting to watch from time to time).
As long as you’re not seeing any physical damage to each of the fish, you should be fine. If you notice a lot of nipping, get a couple more females – but be forewarned, you are going to be inundated with babies in no time flat.
